Chapter six spoke about Socialization, witch means the process
through witch people learn their culture's basic norms, values, belief and
appropriate behaviors. It also talked about Reproducing structure: agents of socialization,
socialization through the life course and it spoke about different things in a
culture that play a key role in socialization. For example, families, peer
groups the work place and religion. Socialization helps to shape and reproduce
social stucture and is a key to social stability, it gives us rules to follow
and certain norms to keep. Our parents are agent of socialization because they are the first to teach us about our culture and certain norms. In the article
"The Retro Wife" they gave us a good example of a norm, one of the
norms for girls that are in their childhood age are to play with dolls. From my
own opinion and experience i believe one of the norm for a boy in his childhood
age growing up is to have a video game system, i don’t know if it was like that
in the 1800s, because it is starting to be a dominant culture and if you don’t
have a video game system now days it means you don’t fit in with that culture
norms.
"Call to Men" by Tony porter. It talked about a men belief, norms and value. Tony talked about how men are made to be tough, dominating, and have a lot of authority above women. A men belief is that they cant show their true emotions around women and other men. He explained how one day he seen his father cry for the first time, one of the reason why he cried is because he couldn't hold the tears in no more and he had to wait until all the ladies got out the car. Tony explained how him and his friend had to have sex with that one girl, every one had to ran a train on her,but Tony felt bad for the girl because she was drug and young,he acted like he had sex with her by pulling down his zippers and walk out proudly.
He also spoke about that us as men belief is that men are strong and women are weak,we are not to show no emotions and fear and men lead and women shall just follow and do as we say. all of those belief were giving to us growing up. tony spoke about the men box.the men box is a set of rules the men should have to be really a men and you shouldn't break none of these rules. For example one rule that the box has is that men should be very aggressive and have a lot of power control over women.
"killing us Softly" by Jean Kilbourne. It talked about women being exploited by advertisement and that they have the need to be beautiful. She spoke about how advisement keeps women trapped. The video also shocked me with certain things she spoke about witch i'm going to explain in my summary. In the beginning of the video she spoke about how much power that ads gives women, but at the same time it can ruin them and how it affect our belief and values. Ads changes the way that we see women because we only seeing for how they look physically but not knowing nothing about their personality.
Jean spoke about how women are seen as things because of how they use their body and what they use them for. They used them for beer ads,car ads and many more. The same thing is happening to men but we don't judge it the same way they judge the women's ads.At a point that video is related to the "Call to Men" video because it talk about how boys being of a very young age starting learn how to show toughness to a young girl and the girl smiling like their is nothing wrong with that its normal. She also talked about how the ads show that girls don't really get that much power and once they do its very silly and that the only rights they have is to remain sexy.
I can relate "Call to Men" and "Killing us Softly" by saying that Socialization is most intense in a person early years, they learn the norms, belief and values. "the life course perspective on socialization" looks at how age, time, and place shape social identities and experience over a lifetime. Schools plays a key role in socialization, those students learn to interact with other people and to being part of a group. They prepare children for their later role in society, build up the students knowledge’s and also give lessons about how children should behave witch is called hidden curriculum. Referring it to "the Retro wife" article, Kelly devoted herself to teaching life lesson, to teach on manners and good habits and that has to deal with agent socialization too.
The Media play's a big role in socialization because it is writing in chapter six that media play an increasingly significant role in the lives of many young people. Media has become a norm to a lot of people in the American culture, it's more of a dominant culture because an increasing amount of people that are using the it. Its another way they look at certain ads and learn from them.they spend more time using the media then they spend interacting with their parents or anyone else. The media is arguably the most influential agent of socialization, in other words, we learned a lot of different way to handle some of our business from the media.
Me personally i learned a lot from the media, for example i learned how to go in the internet and look for an information that i need and speak to people all around the world. The media actually affected my way of life when i was a young child because i used to watch all those superhero movies. I thought the actions that they were doing in the movies were real life until one day i went and try to act like i was superman and i almost killed my self. Religion also play a big role in socialization, its the socializing agent most explicitly focused on the teaching of values and beliefs. In the past religious society they had an enormous role and all aspect of social life, and during the twentieth century it has change, it plays a big, role in certain people life. In the article "the Retro Wife" it spoke a lot about woman ,their right, norms occupational socialization and total institutions. All of those video and article are related because they talked about women and men belief, norms, value in society.
That is one picture i chose that shows the way that men and women socialize. You will find more women sing at a choir then men, some people believe that singing is not really a men thing, especially when they are singing with a soft vocal. Some people look's at the men as being soft,Their not tough, they cant fight. the thing about it is that only certain men not women but men that thinks like that because women loves when a men sing, especially if the men has a soft sweet voice. That is why i chose this picture to show how men and women socialize.
