Gender and Sex,"night to his day"
In the article "Night to his Day" talks about gender, how people see gender and how they react to hit.The article have us two example with two different man the were seen with a babe, people around were proud because the man seem like a responsible man and they were being a father to the baby One problem is that you couldn't tell if the two baby'a were a boy or a girl because of how they were dress. It's written in the article that for an individual gender starts from how you dress the kids or how you adorned the kid in a way that someone else will be able to teill if the kid is a boy or a girl. This sticker is mostly about how a parent can change a child gender raising. It's the way that raise our kids and how we bring them fourth to society shapes their gender. It's written that gender roles change because father are taking care of the kids boys and girls and that women and men works at the same job. Women are more likely now ankle to do what man does. Another about this article mention that I like is that biological evolutions contributes to our social institutions is transformed by social practice. The buildings of genders are socially constructed statuses.Women and men will always be different,it doesn't matter what they do in the social institutions, they will always be different. If men and women ends up be doing the same task, they will most likely be segregated, the women will me looked at a different way because you can't put women and men in the same box, their will always be a huge amount of difference.Gender ranks man above woman of the same race and class. There will always be unequalization in America because that's how the system was made to be,it said in the article that man is A but woman are not,the whites are A but the blacks are not,the middle class and rich are A but the working class and lower are not..Gender is a modern social institutions to construct woman as a group that will be lower then man.
Race&Ethnicity, "Hispanic drop outs mystery
I never knew that there were a higher Hispanic drop out percentage then Bocks.Reading this article motivated me to read more of the actions that are taking place around.
In the article "Hispanic Drop out of school and belief that they attain in there head that shows the reason why they drop out of school, and most of those reason are facts. Some hispanic girls students drop out of school because they get pregnant at a early age, witch means they won't have time for school witch means they have to go to work or stay home to take care of their kids. Some of the other reasons why some hispanic kids drop out of school is because they're failing their classes, they are bored in school,or they believe their not getting that much attention.those kids felt discriminated, they believe that they were looked at differently from everyone else. Some of those hispanic kids believe that the school doesn't like them because, and they don't get a special language help.. They feel as if they're being stereotype by people in the school, they don't fit in with the norms in the school. The article also explains and stated that hispanic drop out are twice more then blacks drop out and most of the hispanic drop outs are foreign norms. It also stated that peer pressure also play a role in the drop out of hispanic, and they feel like they're being prejudice. Now there is a program that targets hispanics drop outs and they are trying to help those kids stay I'm school. I never really had a problem like that in school, witch means I can't really relate this article to my own experience.

extra credit, ted talk education
I watched the Ted education video and it was very interesting,I also learned a lot from each different speaker that were explaining their ideas. One thing I really liked about the video was when a young lady was explaining how she almost drop out of school because she had a babe while she was still in high school and it was hard for her because she was struggling and she felt like giving up but one of her teacher spoke to her and told her to keep moving on with her education, that teacher was also helping her out in school, at the end of her school year she graduated. Most of the other speakers focused on students, teachers and education,I also realize that most of them were teachers. Each of those teachers had a different way of dealing with their students.Another speaker that I liked was Rita Pierson, she was explaining how she taught her students and how she did it differently from other teachers because all the subjects or works that she was teaching in class she made them fun.She also mention that for some kids to learn you have to make them feel special and that they very smart and able to complete the work or anything else. That is one way that she taught her classes. One speaker that really surprised me was bill gates,it took me a while to get a really good understanding of his idea.Bill gates said that teachers has one of the most important jobs in the world and they get no systematic feedback to improve their working skills at that particular job.He also mention and explain how the system isn't fair to some of the teachers and students and he spoke about how we can change that.He explained when he went and travelled to other countries to examine the way that teachers teach their students and how well the students learn and also how well the teachers teached. One thing,he mentioned that I didn't know was that the US is ranked 15 out of all of the high level reading countries and 29 in math.I believed that he mentioned that surveys also help out teachers and the questions that they asks in the surveys help improve a teacher teaching skills.Another good speaker was Geoffrey Canada. He spoke about lousy schools, witch means school that's doesn't improves their educational system. One thing I like about Geoffrey is that he spoke with boldness,he wasn't afraid to say anything he had to say,he also joke around with some of the things he was saying. He explained how poor people has less opportunities then the wealthier and richer people does.He also spoke about how banks are improve with technologies but the system doesn't try that hard to improve some of the schools, and that we blow away billion of dollars on other things then trying to help out some school and the poor kids.I learned a lot from each of those highly talented educators and their different perspective on how to help this generation and the future generation.Someone can really learn a lot just by watching TED,because you hear different ideas from different people.Out of the speakers,my favorites is Geoffrey Canada.I chose him as my favorite becaue of his boldness,he wasn't areas to speak up,and he was funny but over all I had fun watching TED.
Social class
i've watch the video on people like us and chose the article "Cause of Death:inequality". I learned a lot reading the article but not that much watching the video. In some way i believe that the video and the article kind of relate to each other because both of them talked about social class. First i will talk about the article "cause of death:inequality".this article gives us different topics on inequality. The article makes a good point on how inequality is the cause of death on minority of people. Most of those people are poor people. Poor people doesn't have the same amount of opportunities that rich or wealthy people have. There are stages of inequalities that we have witch is poor and rich, women and men and lastly black and white. It is said that white people has more chance to succeed then black people, men has more rights then women and poor people has less opportunitie then the wealthy. Why? But in the article it talks about the cause of death how poor people has more chance of dying then the rich because the poor can't really afford certain healthy goods and other things. Some diseases tend to strike poor people then rich people because of unequal opportunities. Also sometimes poor people are not able to see a doctor as a high income, and sometimes they don't have the money and insurance to get treated. It is written in the article that African American as higher change of getting high blood pressure and that it's more stressful then any situation when they are confronted with racism. This article is to inform us on how unequal that the poor, the rich,African American, white, women and men are unequal.
It took me a while to get a good understanding of "The People Like Us video. In my own point of view I believe that this video is about someone or families status because they mostly talked about the rich and how some people were born in it and that it flows on their generation. They showed different families and their status. One way I can relate this video to the article is that sometimes certain people doesn't work their way up to richness, they were born in it.Because of that they have more opportunities then people that didn't.For example, poor people. Poor people or we can say working people will always have less opportunities then the wealthy and also be unequal. I can also relate the article to what Geoffrey Canada was saying in the TED Talk show.He mention that poor students lose ground in summer times then richer students.when they come back after the summer break their level of intelligent in class decreases. There are different ways that shows that poor people inequality.

Deviance
Deviance is the behaviors that does not conform to basic cultural ad expectations. One example I can use from one my own experience about deviance is that in my culture different people from different families beats their kids from doing something bad or for being disrespectful,it doesn't matter how old you are you will still get hit by your parents.Every society in my culture uses that collective conscience as a norm and belief that treating their kids like this will teach their kids how to live.Another deviance in my culture is that you are able to get married at any age,I never knew that until today I asked my grandma about it and she said they get married at any age. Some people believed it's a secondary deviance because sometimes it ends up in a conflict situation because their are a lot of responsibilities that you will have to attain because most of the time your parents will kick you out,and you have no other choice but to take care of that husband or wife by yourself.Another deviant act is that some people aren't afraid to take naked showers outside where everyone can see them,it actually turns out to be a norm,I chose this as a deviant act because most cultures doesn't do that, only in a bathroom that they will take a naked shower without no one seeing their privacy. Walking around dead bodies in the street is a deviant act in my culture brainwaves someone gets shot on the street other stab and just die on the street,it takes a while for the ambulance or cop to come and pick them up the ground. Most cultures wouldn't leave a dead body on the ground for an amount of time but my culture some people are so use to seeing them on the ground, they walk around it like its nothing.Another deviant act is that My culture has a very high percentage of homeless and poor people,it's starting to be more of a dominant culture because the percentage of homeless and poor people has increased. There are no welfare in Haiti,And the government is not strong enough to help.In a stabilize country like the Unitedstate, the government offers a lot of help. One last deviant act I can use is that you can kill any animal or hit animals on the street, you won't get arrested, and that's a deviant act because it's not accepted in every culture. In the article The positive function of the undeserving poor talks and describe different categories and function of the poor. One of the function is called the three political functions, and it describes the institutional scapegoating and spatial purification. I can also relate this article to chapter eight because it mentioned deviance and stigma. It mention that some of the institutions benefit from undeserving the poor may try to maintain underservingness and it's stigma.

Socialization
Chapter six spoke about Socialization, witch means the process
through witch people learn their culture's basic norms, values, belief and
appropriate behaviors. It also talked about Reproducing structure: agents of socialization,
socialization through the life course and it spoke about different things in a
culture that play a key role in socialization. For example, families, peer
groups the work place and religion. Socialization helps to shape and reproduce
social stucture and is a key to social stability, it gives us rules to follow
and certain norms to keep. Our parents are agent of socialization because they are the first to teach us about our culture and certain norms. In the article
"The Retro Wife" they gave us a good example of a norm, one of the
norms for girls that are in their childhood age are to play with dolls. From my
own opinion and experience i believe one of the norm for a boy in his childhood
age growing up is to have a video game system, i don’t know if it was like that
in the 1800s, because it is starting to be a dominant culture and if you don’t
have a video game system now days it means you don’t fit in with that culture
norms.
"Call to Men" by Tony porter. It talked about a men belief, norms and value. Tony talked about how men are made to be tough, dominating, and have a lot of authority above women. A men belief is that they cant show their true emotions around women and other men. He explained how one day he seen his father cry for the first time, one of the reason why he cried is because he couldn't hold the tears in no more and he had to wait until all the ladies got out the car. Tony explained how him and his friend had to have sex with that one girl, every one had to ran a train on her,but Tony felt bad for the girl because she was drug and young,he acted like he had sex with her by pulling down his zippers and walk out proudly.
He also spoke about that us as men belief is that men are strong and women are weak,we are not to show no emotions and fear and men lead and women shall just follow and do as we say. all of those belief were giving to us growing up. tony spoke about the men box.the men box is a set of rules the men should have to be really a men and you shouldn't break none of these rules. For example one rule that the box has is that men should be very aggressive and have a lot of power control over women.
"killing us Softly" by Jean Kilbourne. It talked about women being exploited by advertisement and that they have the need to be beautiful. She spoke about how advisement keeps women trapped. The video also shocked me with certain things she spoke about witch i'm going to explain in my summary. In the beginning of the video she spoke about how much power that ads gives women, but at the same time it can ruin them and how it affect our belief and values. Ads changes the way that we see women because we only seeing for how they look physically but not knowing nothing about their personality.
Jean spoke about how women are seen as things because of how they use their body and what they use them for. They used them for beer ads,car ads and many more. The same thing is happening to men but we don't judge it the same way they judge the women's ads.At a point that video is related to the "Call to Men" video because it talk about how boys being of a very young age starting learn how to show toughness to a young girl and the girl smiling like their is nothing wrong with that its normal. She also talked about how the ads show that girls don't really get that much power and once they do its very silly and that the only rights they have is to remain sexy.
I can relate "Call to Men" and "Killing us Softly" by saying that Socialization is most intense in a person early years, they learn the norms, belief and values. "the life course perspective on socialization" looks at how age, time, and place shape social identities and experience over a lifetime. Schools plays a key role in socialization, those students learn to interact with other people and to being part of a group. They prepare children for their later role in society, build up the students knowledge’s and also give lessons about how children should behave witch is called hidden curriculum. Referring it to "the Retro wife" article, Kelly devoted herself to teaching life lesson, to teach on manners and good habits and that has to deal with agent socialization too.
The Media play's a big role in socialization because it is writing in chapter six that media play an increasingly significant role in the lives of many young people. Media has become a norm to a lot of people in the American culture, it's more of a dominant culture because an increasing amount of people that are using the it. Its another way they look at certain ads and learn from them.they spend more time using the media then they spend interacting with their parents or anyone else. The media is arguably the most influential agent of socialization, in other words, we learned a lot of different way to handle some of our business from the media.
Me personally i learned a lot from the media, for example i learned how to go in the internet and look for an information that i need and speak to people all around the world. The media actually affected my way of life when i was a young child because i used to watch all those superhero movies. I thought the actions that they were doing in the movies were real life until one day i went and try to act like i was superman and i almost killed my self. Religion also play a big role in socialization, its the socializing agent most explicitly focused on the teaching of values and beliefs. In the past religious society they had an enormous role and all aspect of social life, and during the twentieth century it has change, it plays a big, role in certain people life. In the article "the Retro Wife" it spoke a lot about woman ,their right, norms occupational socialization and total institutions. All of those video and article are related because they talked about women and men belief, norms, value in society.
That is one picture i chose that shows the way that men and women socialize. You will find more women sing at a choir then men, some people believe that singing is not really a men thing, especially when they are singing with a soft vocal. Some people look's at the men as being soft,Their not tough, they cant fight. the thing about it is that only certain men not women but men that thinks like that because women loves when a men sing, especially if the men has a soft sweet voice. That is why i chose this picture to show how men and women socialize.

Power
In the video milgram experiment,it shows you how human beings are devoted to authority and obedience.the experiment was also testing their limit of responsiveness to authority. In other words the experiment was to check how human beings will react over the effect on punishment on learning. It was an experiment made by stanley milgram in 1963 perform again to examine how normal people can perpatuate a very bad act simply by following orders. The person who chose to be the teacher were put to the test by being asked a series of question for them to answer. They were being trick by making them believe that each answer they answered wrong will effect the victim that chose to to be a learner in that experiment will be electricuted by the lethal eltric shock. The test was to see if they would call a stop to it,since they were told to continue they kept going. The experiment was to see how they would respond to orders. The person that was asking them questions had some basic power over them because the people that were being examined wanted to stop, but they couldn't because they were told to keep going. Refering this experiment to my life, a lot of times because of obedience i did things that i didn't really want to do or feel like doing it at that particular moment.
I can relate the Milgram experiment to the reading on chapter five because it talks about power and oppression. In some ways we are being controled and yet some people dont notice it because of lack of knowledge.Oppression talks about how some people doesn't have the same power as someone elses and when peole decrease the faith of other people to be fully human. The experiment of Milgram gave us a good example,in the video it shows you that the people that were being tested wanted to stop with the expiriment, they had a choice if they really wanted to they could've just left, but because the man that was testing them kept saying to continue they felt as if they had no choice but to keep going. In some other cultures people act differently toward oppression and the power that they have. For example a lot of people that has more power then the other usualy abuse their power. In some jobs in my country the workers in that job usualy get exploited, and their's nothing they can do about it.In America most people has a limit to their power, for example, parents has a lot of power over their kids, because if the parent tell the kid to do something they have no choice but to do it. In some cases people feels like they are powerless, and it's mostly the poor that always feel like that and the mentally ill people.Another type of oppression is violence, its the most known and obvious oppression because it happens all around the world and it has been increasing. There are a lot of different type of violences, sexual violence, physical abuse, verbal abuse and economic abuse.Another form of oppression is cultural imperialism, witch a group of people in a society or culture establishing a norm. Some human beins think they got control over their life, and think cause of their belief in their society that the government doesn't have control over them. But they dont realize they are expected to be at a certain place and certain time,if they dont get to that place at that specific time they will be in trouble, that place can be a school or job. It relates to the Milgram video because the person that was examining the people had the power to tell the people that were being tested to keep going even though they wanted to stop. through out the year peple have been opening up their eye and education has been a lot of help, education had increase a lot of student knowledge and gave them consciousness of them selves and the society they live in.

Abortion is one of the main problem the we are fighting against in the culture i live in. Some people argue that an unborn fetus is still considered to be living,in that having abortion would murder. In addition some girls believes that in some cases abortion is their only choice, because they didn't plan to have a babe,or they dont want their parents to be aware of them being pregnant and for them to get in trouble. A very big amount of controversy is caused by religions, because most religions argues that it is a sin to get in abortion because you taking a life away. The OB/GYN argues that after four month you shouldn't be able to get an obortion because the fetus haven't really develop.
Out of all symbols that I could have choosen, I decided to pick the Bible because it represents so many things and it has different meanings to it. To start off, When people see or think of the Bible the automatic thing that pops up in their head is Church,Christ, and Power. Something that the Bible represent that i think is important for us to comprehend in our daily life is Compassionate, how to treat one another, love, and affection. Futhermore, a Bible symbolize many other things and its also hands on. It motivate people to always do the right thing in life, even though now its a struggle because so many people are not showing enough courtesy and they are taking advantage of what's given to them and are showing less appreciation. My ideology is that if i follow the bible i will make it to heavenGang violance and bullying are another problem that we are facing in our society. more african American kid and some hispanic and white are joining gangs and thinking that it will make them cool and gangster around their neighborhood. And they end up bullying other kids to get more attention and self popularity.

That is one non matrerial picture because it's an idea that represent the American culture. We are offered a lot of opportunities in the culture that we are living in, most of those opportunities were giving, and some were introduce to us. It is one of the main reason why a lot of different people from different cultures usually come to America. We are known as the number one country witch if you really take hold of those opportunities giving to you,you will most likely be successful in this culture.

The type of shoes that we wear and bran kind of represent our norms in my culture. in my society sometimes represent us in certain ways. some kids in this culture believes that when they have them,it makes them cool, and shows that they get money..In that case, when they go to another country most people look at it like you have a lot of money, and you fresh.Sometime it makes someone feel reprehensible for not having one of these shoes,or a shoe with that bran name.
I picked this picture because it kind of describe the element of culture.America has a lot of different cultures with different languages and some of them are dialected. A lot of people from different cultures and country including believes that America is a country of opportunity, and that is why most of us from different cultures come to America,we want to live the American dream.

teenage wasteland
In the article teenage wasteland,it talks about four kids that lived in bergenfield New jersey that were founded dead in a red colored Chevrolet. The people in the society say that it was suicide. but They died of carbon monoxide poisoning. They wasn't really going to school,People use to call them different types of names, they said that those four kids friends were described as kids who listen to thrash metal, they had shaggy haircuts and wear lots of black leathers. They were refers as weird dropouts kids. Those kids wasn't respected even tho they died. One of the reason why i believe these kids committed suicide is because they couldn't fit in the society that they lived in. Also the type of music they were listening too,and the things that smoke started playing around with their minds. Certain things that you you make a habit, and you know it can effect your everyday life can lead you to commit suicide. Teenage suicide has increase through out the years, each teen committed suicide for several reason. Some were called names, and some were not getting enough attention from their family or those around them .Those four kids were not considered as normal kids in their society,it is probably why they behaving that way and committed suicide. It refers in the article that Boredom lead to drugs, and boredom can kill, and it's probably what those kids were going thru because they didn't have as many opportunities as those kids that lives in the city's have.

The Promise and pitfalls of going into the field
In the the article The Promise and Pitfalls of going into the Field talks about some ways that ethrographies do their job and how effective some of them are and are not. An ethnographer studies an indevidual culture, observing social activities as an outsider. It talks about several ethnographies that some of the enthnographers wrote, how some of them have a lot of facts, and some missing a lot of informations. Ethnography can be into several important stages:data gathering, data analysis and data presentation. It takes years for an ethnographer to study an individul culture,or communities. So many books were written about different type of cultures, but yet not all of them have really a whole fact about the cultures..It is mostly about researching about something that you are going thru in your community of relationship, and explain the scientific side of it. One of the books that was written by Anderson,Elijah. Code of the street.New York Norton,1999,it was an examination of inner city black America. It talks about the complicated parts or involvent governing violence in urban areas. There are many more ethnogrphies by different sets of people. It refers to the chapters that we have been going thru in class witch gave us the definitions of culture, witch is the collection of values, belief, knowledge, norms, language, behavior and material shared.
WHO AM I
i wrote this before but for some reason it got deleted,i dont know how that happened. Who am i? My name is Cedric Riche,i was born in July 21 1993,so that means im a summer babe. I was born in an island name Haiti, use to struggle a lot when i was a little kid,i use to street fight, use to steal, use to give my mom a lot of problems. My mom struggled more then i use too, because she had hard times puttin food on the table, and she was feeding a whole family, aunti, uncle, cousin, and their son and doughters. The funny thing about it is that she only have two kids and thats me and my little sister Pamela. My dad wasn't around cause as soon that i was born he had to go to America. I was confuse about having a dad untill i reach the age of ten,he came to Haiti to see me,then went back to America. He made the decision to bring to America,so i came to America when i was 12.I didn't know no english, not even one word. Since i came here i saw that they had a lot of opportunities for you to be whatever that you want to be in life,i decided to grab on every opportunity that comes my way. And thats why i am the way i am today. Im a christian believing in one GOD and following the Bible, i am a song writer,i am an actor,i am a musician, and i am highly motivated not conceded, calloborated to venerate the one who created. My goal is to be an FBI Agent,i will work as hard as i can to achieve that goal, also i am very athletic,i play many sports, but my favorite is football, because i made it to the all stars playing football,im also good at volleyball, soccer, track, basketball and some others. And two of my favorite instrument are the piano and the drums. I love to go the the beach, the movies, and anywhere that is fun to be, because i love to be happy and enjoy myself. One animal that i cant stand are snakes,i hate everything about snakes. And i love lions and white tigers,i dont know why but i would like to have one in my house as a little babe, because once it starts to get big i will give it away. And that's pretty much about me,and im fun to be around. Thats who i am. One historical event that shaped me is that most people has the same righ, but yet some doesn't even know what their right are.One thing that looks different in my life when i see it from a big picture is when my dream come true, and achieve all my goals in life, being successful.
